The Student Exchange and Visitor Program (SEVP) Student Portal uses email to convey important information to a student. The portal emails a student about:

  • Creating a portal account
  • Password resets/changes
  • Locked accounts
  • Email address changes
  • Reporting requirements

This article provides information on when a portal email is sent and what text is included in the email. The SEVP Portal emails described below relate to:

Creating Portal Accounts

When creating your SEVP Portal account, you will receive three emails:

Congratulations on the approval of your Optional Practical Training (OPT). You are now ready to create your SEVP Portal account, the next step in the OPT process.

By law, you must report changes to:
* Your address or telephone number
* Employer information

The SEVP Portal is the tool you will use to report these changes. Use the following link to go to the Create SEVP Portal Account page.

IMPORTANT: This link is only valid for 14 days beginning on the date of this email. If the link expires, contact your designated school official (DSO) for help. Your DSO can request a new link for you.

To create your account, you will be asked to enter your SEVIS ID number and create a password. You can find your SEVIS ID in the top left corner of your Form I-20, below the words 'Department of Homeland Security.' Refer to the sample Form I-20. Account Closure Six Months After OPT Authorization Ends

When OPT authorization ends and there is no pending or approved extension, you will receive three emails:

Your OPT authorization period has ended. The Student Exchange and Visitor Program (SEVP) will close your SEVP Portal account on <date of closure>.

You have 15 days after the end date of your OPT authorization to make any updates. On <date 16 days after the OPT authorization end date> the account will change to read only. Make sure your account information is accurate before that date. When your account changes to read only, you will need to contact your Designated School Official (international student adviser) to make changes. 

You may need a copy of your account information in the future. Before you lose access to the SEVP Portal, use your browser’s Print or Save features to keep a copy of the information in your account. Your History Page contains a record of all events for your account.

5 months after OPT ends

STEM Reporting Requirements

The employment end date for the above employer changed in SEVIS. This also changed the due date for your final evaluation. Make note of this new deadline. As a student on STEM OPT, you are required to complete a final evaluation for your STEM training when: 1.) you stop working for a STEM OPT employer or 2.) your STEM OPT ends. Your designated school official (DSO) must receive a completed evaluation within 10 days of the employment end date listed above.

On or before your new employment end date, work with your employer to complete the final evaluation section of the Form I-983. Then send it to your DSO.

If you did not change your employer end date in the SEVP Portal or if you did not ask your DSO to make this change in SEVIS, contact your DSO immediately.

  2. Open and review the section, "Annual Self-Evaluations."
  3. Work with your employer to complete the required sections of the Form I-983.
  4. Submit the completed self-evaluation to your school’s designated school official.

Your DSO will confirm in SEVIS that you have submitted the self-evaluation report.

Why and when do you have to do this?

Why and when do you have to do this?
The STEM OPT rules [(8CFR 214.2(f)(10)(ii)(C)] require you to complete the first “Evaluation of Student Progress” portion of the Form I-983, “Training Plan for STEM OPT Students” within 12 months of the listed STEM OPT start date. At the end of the STEM OPT extension, a student must conduct a second, final assessment.

Your OPT and your F-1 status may be terminated if:

  • You fail to make the report to your DSO on time or
  • Your DSO does not update SEVIS to validate your OPT participation.
