Form I-17 Petition Update - Instructional Sites (Campuses)

School officials must update their institution’s Form I-17 when information on the petition changes or does not reflect the institution’s current operating status. Changes must be reported within 21 days of the change. This includes changes to information on Page 5 of the Form I-17: Campuses and Instructional Sites.

Schools must update the Campuses and Instructional Sites information on the Form I‑17 petition to:

  • Add a new instructional site where international students will attend.
  • Remove an instructional site.
  • Change information about an instructional site, for example, an address change.

  • In accordance with SEVP Policy Guidance for Adjudicators 1003-03: Reporting Instructional Sites, the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) considers all campuses as instructional sites. However, until further notice, the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) will reference both campuses and instructional sites.
  • When updating the Form I-17, list only locations where international students will attend.

PDSOs must provide all required evidence at the same time as they submit the petition update in SEVIS. School officials must ensure that all required documentation is ready at the time of filing the petition update.

  • Required fields are marked by a red asterisk. *
  • Adjudicated fields are marked by an hourglass. 
  • Once a PDSO attests to and submits a Form I-17 update that includes a change to an adjudicated field, the Form I-17 is locked for any further updates until the update is adjudicated by SEVP’s School Certification Unit (SCU).
  • When a PDSO attests to and submits changes to only unadjudicated fields, the changes are accepted immediately, and the Form I-17 remains unlocked for future edits.
     

To enter additional instructional sites or edit current instructional sites in your Form I-17 petition:

  1. Go to your School Information page.

2. Click Update School Information (Form I-17). The Edit School Information (Form I-17), Contact Information page opens.

  3. Click Page 5: Campuses and Instructional Sites in the navigation menu on the left. The Edit School Information (Form I-17), Campuses and Instructional Sites page opens with the names and addresses of all instructional sites currently listed on your school’s Form I-17.

 4. Function buttons at the bottom of the Campus and Instructional Sites page include:

  • Save Draft – Saves changes made to the Form I-17 in draft without submitting the petition.
  • Print Draft – Prints a draft Form I-17 without submitting the petition.
  • Previous – Saves any campus or instructional site changes and returns you to Page 4: Calendar, Costs, and Demographics without submitting the petition.
  • Next – Saves any campus or instructional site changes and forwards you to Page 6: School Officials without submitting the petition.
  • Cancel – Cancels all changes made to the Form I-17 without saving the entered changes and restores the previous, saved values. After confirming the delete action, SEVIS returns to the School Contact page. 

To add an additional instructional site: 

  1. Go to the Edit School Information (Form I-17), Campuses and Instructional Sites page.

2. Click Add Campus button on the Campuses and Instructional Sites page. The Add/Update Campus modal opens.

  3. Enter information about the instructional site:

  • 5.3 Campus Name – Enter the name of the site.

  • Do not enter the exact same name for each of your instructional sites. This causes problems for lists and reports in SEVIS. 
  • If your instructional sites share the same name, such as XYZ University, modify their names to make them unique; for example: XYX University – Arlington, XYZ University – 5th Avenue, XYZ University – Evansville, etc.
  • 5.4 Mailing Address – Enter the address where the instructional site receives its mail. This mailing address will also print on the Form I-20 for any students at this campus.
    • It may include a P.O. Box number.
    • It may be the same as the main campus mailing address, but it does not have to be.

SEVIS will validate the address entered. Review the Address Standards for information on SEVIS address standards.

  • 5.5 Physical Address – Enter the physical address of the instructional site. Click the checkbox, if the physical address is the same as the mailing address. 
  • 5.6 Telephone Number – Enter the telephone number for the site.
  • 5.7 Fax Number – Enter the fax number of the site.

4. Click either Cancel or Submit on the Add/Update Campus modal:

  • Cancel – Returns to the Campus and Instructional Sites page without making any changes.

  • Submit – Adds the instructional site to the petition but does not submit the petition.

 5. Click Submit in the top, left corner of the page to open the submission page, Edit School Information (Form I-17). See the Form I-17 Petition Update – Submit article in SEVIS Help Hub for instructions on completing the submission process.

Icon - Pay attention to an important point

Before you remove a campus from your Form I-17, all student records at that campus must be in Canceled, Completed, Terminated or Deactivated status. If any records in Completed or Terminated status have requested or pending reinstatements, you will not be able to delete the campus.

  • Check your Students Requesting Reinstatement list to find those records.
  • Confirm whether the student is still waiting for reinstatement or if it is safe to cancel the reinstatement. 

To remove an instructional site from your Form I-17 petition:

  1. Go to the Edit School Information (Form I-17), Campuses and Instructional Sites page.

  2. Click Delete next to the instructional site you want to remove. A Confirm message displays.

  3.  Click Yes to remove the instructional site from your petition.

  4. Click Submit in the top, left corner of the page to open the submission page, Edit School Information (Form I 17). See the Form I-17 Petition Update – Submit article in SEVIS Help Hub for instructions on completing the submission process.

To edit information for an instructional site:

  1. Go to the Edit School Information (Form I-17), Campuses and Instructional Sites page.

  2. Click Update next to the appropriate instructional site. The Add/Update Campus modal opens with the existing information for the instructional site displayed.

  3. Update information about the instructional site, as necessary:

  • 5.3 Campus Name – Enter the name of the site.
