Students: Beware of Phone Scammers

December 9, 2022

Beware of a scam using the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) Response Center (SRC) phone number with a (703) area code and claiming to be SRC representatives.

Students have been told to purchase a gift card for deposit and that an agent would pick up the card.

Remember:

  • SEVP officials will NEVER ask you to provide credit/debit card/gift card numbers, wire transfers, bank routing numbers, or to make bitcoin deposits for any purpose. Instead, they will direct students to the I-901 FMJ fee website.
  • Currently, when SEVP officials call students, the area code in the caller ID will be a Washington, D.C. area code of “(202),” rather than the “(703)” area code used in recent scam attempts.
  • NEVER divulge personal or financial information to unknown callers.

Please report all incidents to the Homeland Security Investigations tip line.
