Effective May 11, 2023, the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) ended its Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) guidance, consistent with the end of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, following the end of the COVID-19 National Emergency on April 10, 2023.
On May 3, 2023, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) posted a notice in the Federal Register that provides Special Student Relief (SSR) employment benefits for F-1 nonimmigrant students from Hong Kong experiencing severe economic hardship as a direct result of the current crisis in Hong Kong. This notice redesignates SSR to include eligible students who are in a lawful F-1 status as of Jan. 26, 2023, and extends relief until Feb. 5, 2025.
On Feb. 21, 2023, the U.S. Department of State announced that consular officers can issue an F or M student visa up to 365 days in advance of an international student’s Program Start Date. Previously, student visas could only be issued up to 120 days before a student’s Program Start Date. 
As you begin your journey of preparing to study in the United States, you may be considering the option of consulting service providers to help you in this process. Depending on where you live, service providers could include a recruiter, broker or agent who charges fees or receives a commission for such things as helping you obtain a student visa, locate housing in the United States or other services. It is important to know your rights and responsibilities and the problems you could encounter by hiring a recruiter, broker or agent. Beware of Scams
Beware of a scam using the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) Response Center (SRC) phone number with a (703) area code and claiming to be SRC representatives. Students have been told to purchase a gift card for deposit and that an agent would pick up the card. Remember:
