DSOs: Ensure Your Students Have an Accurate Email Address in SEVIS

February 28, 2018

As a designated school official (DSO), it is important to ensure that your F and M international students have accurate information in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), including an up-to-date email address. If your students are eligible to create an account for the SEVP Portal, the information to create their account will be sent to their email address listed in SEVIS.

Students cannot change the email address they use for the SEVP Portal by themselves, so it is important that the email address maintained in SEVIS is accurate.

In addition to providing access to the SEVP Portal, an accurate email address must be kept on file in SEVIS in case the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) needs to contact an international student for official government business.

The SEVP Portal, which will launch on March 23, allows F-1 international students participating in post-completion optional practical training and M-1 international students on practical training to report address, telephone and employment information to SEVP.

For more information about the SEVP Portal and about changing your students’ email addresses in SEVIS, visit the SEVIS and the SEVP Portal page on the SEVIS Help Hub.
