Get to Know SEVP’s Field Representatives

August 28, 2024

SEVP field representatives serve as key resources for school officials. They enhance national security by helping certified schools comply with policy and regulations. Field representatives act as direct, day-to-day liaisons between SEVP and SEVP-certified schools. Much of their time is spent meeting with school officials and other stakeholders face-to-face.

Ninety-four percent of field representatives have a background in education, and 89 percent are previous designated school officials (DSOs).

This experience allows field representatives to serve as subject matter experts with a unique understanding of school officials’ needs and challenges. “I am a firm believer that education has the ability to bridge gaps across regions, cultures, and sectors of society,” one field representative shared. “My school visits allow me to stay connected to education. It creates an opportunity to engage with and share knowledge with stakeholders to increase awareness, compliance, and security for our nation.”

Field representatives meet with DSOs and principal designated school officials (PDSOs) at certified schools in their assigned territories annually.

“As a former PDSO, I understand the value of personal support and guidance that I can provide to our stakeholders,” one field representative shared. They also train school officials on SEVP policies, regulations and processes and conduct site visits as part of the certification process. One field representative explained that, “It's very satisfying to reassure a PDSO or DSO that they have all the information they need for SEVIS advising and reporting at their fingertips… It's rewarding to demonstrate resources to help them in their important work.”

Field representatives average 256 school visits per year.

When asked what they value most about their school visits, the most common answers included:

  • Using face-to-face interactions to build relationships and form interpersonal connections with school officials.
  • Providing guidance and support to help school officials navigate complex regulations and ensure compliance with federal regulations.
  • Making an educational impact and helping international students through their advisors.
  • The personal satisfaction derived from assisting others, solving problems and serving as a reliable source of information.
