During an international student’s time in the United States, it is crucial to maintain and update their records in the Student and Exchange Visitor System (SEVIS). Whether you are an international student or a designated school official (DSO), take a moment to review these resources to ensure compliance.
Students
While studying in the United States, you may be eligible to transfer to another school. To do so, you must maintain your F or M status and follow the correct transfer procedures, including attending all classes while awaiting transfer. Learn more about student transfer procedures by reviewing these resources and reach out to your DSO to get started:
School Officials
An F or M student may transfer between Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified schools. The SEVIS transfer process allows you to electronically move SEVIS records and retain the same SEVIS ID for the student. If a student is accepted by another SEVP-certified school, you may not refuse to transfer the SEVIS record for reasons that include, but are not limited to, financial or business reasons. Remember, SEVIS records are government property.
By signing the Form I-17, SEVP-certified schools agree to follow federal regulations and policies governing F and M students. This includes complying with school transfer procedures, regardless of school policies. DSOs may not terminate a nonimmigrant student’s SEVIS status solely because the student requested a transfer to another school. For more information, review the following resources:
