USCIS Releases a Revised Form I-765

October 12, 2017

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently released a revised version of the Form I-765, “Application for Employment Authorization.”

USCIS will continue to accept both the old and revised versions of the Form I-765 until Dec. 3, 2017. Beginning Dec. 4, 2017, USCIS will only accept the revised version of the form, dated “07/17/17.”

The revised Form I-765 includes fields to apply for a Social Security number (SSN) or a replacement SSN card without visiting a Social Security Administration (SSA) office. For more detailed information about the revisions made to the Form I-765, please read USCIS’ news release regarding the form.

Please note that applicants are not required to apply for a new or replacement SSN card using the Form I-765 and may continue to apply for one in person at their local SSA office.

The revisions to the Form I-765 do not change the process for work authorizations and completing the fields to apply for a SSN will not impact USCIS processing times. As a reminder, F and M international students must file the Form I-765 with USCIS and receive authorization before participating in certain work or training opportunities, including:

  • F-1 international students applying for authorization to work off campus.
  • F-1 international students applying for optional practical training (OPT) or the science, technology, engineering and mathematics OPT extension.
  • M-1 international students applying for practical training.

To learn more about the revised version of the Form I-765, register for the USCIS and SSA stakeholder teleconference, scheduled for Oct. 18, 2017, from 2 to 3 p.m. EDT.
