Beyond International Education Week – Additional Resources for SEVP Stakeholders
November 24, 2014
Last week, the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) joined other government partners to commemorate International Education Week – a week that celebrates the benefits of international education throughout the United States and across the globe. The week kicked off with the release of the Open Doors Report. It revealed there were 886,052 international students in the United States for the 2013/2014 academic year – an 8 percent increase from the previous academic year.
The increase is great news for colleges and universities throughout the United States, as it proves the country continues to be a top destination for international study. These students and exchange visitors help foster global awareness and mutual understanding of diverse cultures. It is part of SEVP’s mission to welcome these students while also protecting national security. To support our mission, we work closely with schools and students to educate them about the international student process. This includes regular engagement with the academic community through conference participation, field representatives and online tools, among other support services.
This year, SEVP participated in-person or virtually in more than 60 conferences and events. To increase public engagement in policy development related to international students, SEVP continues to publish draft guidance for public comment through Study in the States.
To further its engagement with SEVP-certified schools, this year the program deployed field representatives throughout the United States, with additional representatives slated for deployment next year. These field representatives are a key resource for school officials as they help them understand SEVP’s rules and regulations and the federal laws that govern international students studying in the United States.
We continue to enhance Study in the States with the launch of a new design and several new features earlier this year. Check out our updated Study Guide to the States – an interactive step-by-step guide to help students and school officials navigate the international student process. No matter your role in the process, the website and its tools helps you find the latest news and information on pertinent topics, from maintaining student visa status to SEVP certification and beyond.
