Changes Students Must Report to their DSOs

February 28, 2014

While in the United States, it is critical that you understand the importance of maintaining your student status. One requirement you must follow is to report any change in certain information to your designated school official (DSO) as soon as it happens – certain changes require you to report within 10 days. Your DSO is responsible for making sure all your information is correct in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). This is important because several U.S. government agencies rely on accurate SEVIS data.

You must report changes to any of the following to your DSO:

  • Change to your major, program, or degree level
  • Change to your education level
  • Intent to transfer to a new school
  • Intent to take a break or temporary absence from school
  • Travel outside the United States
  • Move to a new address
  • Change to your name
  • Request a program extension
  • Change to any employer information (if applicable)

If you have questions about requirements for class attendance, employment, or continuing your education at the end of your program of study, speak with your DSO. Remember, your DSO is there to help you.
