Understanding Reduced Course Load for F-1 and M-1 Students

February 27, 2025

As an international student in the United States on an F-1 or M-1 visa, maintaining compliance with visa requirements is crucial. This typically means maintaining full-time enrollment. However, there are circumstances where students may be eligible to take fewer courses temporarily — this is where a Reduced Course Load (RCL) comes into play.

What is a Reduced Course Load?

With proper authorization, an RCL allows F-1 and M-1 students to drop below full-time enrollment without losing their student status. This is possible under specific conditions such as academic difficulties, medical issues or during a student’s final term.

When Can RCL Be Authorized?

For F-1 Students:

  • Illness or Medical Condition – Up to 12 months with medical documentation.
  • Academic Difficulties – For initial academic struggles, with a minimum six-credit load.
  • Final Term – If the student can complete their program with fewer courses.
  • Special Student Relief (SSR) – For students with approved SSR employment.
  • Part-Time Commuter Student – For students attending within 75 miles of the U.S. border.

For M-1 Students:

  • Illness or Medical Condition – Up to five months.
  • Part-Time Commuter Student – Similar to F-1 commuters.

The RCL Authorization Process

For an RCL to be granted, the student must provide relevant documentation. The designated school official (DSO) authorizes the RCL in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) by entering the reason and dates for the reduction. During this time, students remain in valid status and are expected to return to full-time enrollment once the RCL period ends.

DSOs must:

  • Ensure RCL does not exceed time limits (12 months for F-1, five months for M-1).
  • Align SEVIS data with the academic calendar.
  • Review each request thoroughly and ensure proper documentation.

RCL offers necessary flexibility for students facing challenges while maintaining their legal status. DSOs play a vital role in ensuring that all RCL requests are handled according to DHS guidelines. For more details, visit the SEVIS Help Hub Reduced Course Load page.
