SEVIS by the Numbers: Explore Students’ Primary Majors in 2021

May 24, 2022

On April 6, the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) released the 2021 SEVIS by the Numbers report which highlights key Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) data.

A main section in the SEVIS by the Numbers report outlines popular majors of study that international students pursued during the 2021 calendar year. While international students can pursue more than one major during their program of study in the United States, below are trends that spotlight students’ primary majors, the foremost majors listed on their SEVIS record and corresponding to most of their coursework in the states.

Major Trends:

  • In calendar year 2021, international students in the United States hailed from 225 countries and pursued 1,485 different primary majors.
  • The most popular higher education major among international students was Business Administration and Management.
  • Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) majors were among the top 20 majors pursued by international students, with Computer Science as the second most pursued major overall.
  • The third most popular major was Second Language Learning, which indicates a major in a language other than English, such as Spanish language or literature.
