On Nov. 13, 2017, the Institute of International Education (IIE) released its annual Open Doors Report.

The report, which is released each year as part of International Education Week, includes detailed information about post-secondary student flows into and out of the United States during the previous academic year.

The Open Doors Report for the 2016-17 academic year indicates that, for the second consecutive year, more than one million international students studied in the United States. These students contributed $39.4 billion to the U.S. economy in 2016.

As with the 2016 Open Doors Report, this year’s report also showed an increase during the 2016-17 academic year in the number of students pursuing optional practical training (OPT). Compared with the previous year, the number of students participating in OPT increased by 19.1 percent.

Other trends from the 2017 Open Doors Report include the following:

• India, China and South Korea remain the top three countries of origin for international students in the United States.
• One out of three international students studies in California, New York or Texas.
• One out of five international students studies engineering.
• International students at U.S. community colleges represented 8.9 percent of all international enrollment.
• Two thirds of international students fund their education in the United States primarily through international funding sources, such as personal funds or family, a foreign government or university, or a foreign private sponsor.

IIE’s Open Doors Report is based on a survey of approximately 3,000 accredited, Student and Exchange Visitor Program-certified post-secondary institutions in the United States.
