Whether you are a current F or M international student or you are still deciding if you want to study in the United States, it is important to consider campus safety.

Keep these campus safety questions in mind as you go through the international student life cycle.

Prospective International Students

If you want to study in the United States, you must select a school certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). In addition to being SEVP-certified, consider:

• Does the school have its own police department?
• Does the school publish its campus crime policies?
• Does the school have an emergency preparedness plan, and is it available to students?
• Does the school have a mass notification system to contact students in the event of an emergency?

Current International Students

If you are already studying in the United States, there are many precautions you can take to stay safe while on campus. Ask yourself the following questions:

• Do I know how to contact my local or campus police?
• Do I know how to contact my designated school official and my campus housing’s resident assistant?
• Do I know my school’s emergency preparedness plan and what to do in the event of an emergency?
• Am I signed up for emergency and crime alerts from my local or campus police?
