How the SEVP Portal Benefits Students and DSOs

September 20, 2016

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) is improving the post-completion optional practical training (OPT) reporting and compliance process by launching the SEVP Portal in December 2016. The SEVP Portal will allow F-1 post-completion OPT students to report personal and employer information to SEVP.

Allowing students to report personal and employer information directly enhances data integrity and can lessen the burden for some designated school officials (DSOs). The SEVP Portal will:

  • Help ensure that student information is correct before it is entered into the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
  • Lessen the burden for some DSOs by holding students accountable for adding or changing certain information as required.
  • Help maintain accurate and complete personal and employer information in SEVIS for F-1 and M-1 post-completion practical training students.

As a reminder, the portal does not grant students direct access to SEVIS but does interface with the system. Students must have a valid email address in SEVIS to use the portal.

For more updates about the SEVP Portal, watch the recording of the latest SEVP InFocus Webinar. Be on the lookout for information specifically about the SEVP Portal coming soon to Study in the States and the SEVIS Help Hub.
