DSOs: Check Out New K-12 Infographics in the Resource Library

September 13, 2016

As a designated school official (DSO) at a kindergarten through grade 12 (K-12) school, there are many policies and processes to know. For example, it is important to remember that F-1 international students at the kindergarten through grade eight levels are not permitted to study at public schools in the United States. F-1 international students in kindergarten through grade eight must only attend an SEVP-certified private school.

To help DSOs better understand this Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) policy and others related to primary and secondary F-1 students, Study in the States added two new infographics to the Study in the States Resource Library.

The first is the Public and Private K-12 Schools: Know the Difference infographic, which compares the rules for F-1 international students at K-12 private schools and grade nine through 12 public high schools. The infographic includes detailed information about:

  • The length of time K-12 international students can study in the United States.
  • The costs associated with attending primary or secondary school in the United States.
  • The documents K-12 international students must present upon arrival to a U.S. port of entry.

The second infographic is the Public Grade 9-12 Student Life Cycle (F-1), which shows the international student process for F-1 international students at SEVP-certified grade nine through 12 public high schools. Similar to the Private K-12 Student Life Cycle (F-1), this infographic explains the student life cycle from applying to an SEVP-certified school to departing the United States after completing the program of study.
