1.11 Million F and M Students Study in the United States

August 30, 2016

There are currently 1.11 million F and M students studying in the United States, a 5.5 percent increase since July 2015, according to the latest SEVIS by the Numbers report now available on ICE.gov.

There was a similar 5 percent growth rate in the number of J-1 exchange visitors currently residing in the United States, bringing the total number of J-1 exchange visitors to approximately 258,000.

The report also notes that there are currently 8,673 Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified schools in the United States. Of the 1.11 million F and M students attending these schools:

  • Seventy-seven percent are enrolled in bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral programs.
  • Forty-two percent study science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) releases the quarterly report on Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) data to highlight international student trends. Starting last quarter, SEVIS by the Numbers began reporting yearly trends rather than by quarter to get a more accurate snapshot.

To learn more about international student data, download the SEVIS by the Numbers report on ICE.gov/SEVP. Past SEVIS by the Numbers reports can be found on ICE’s Freedom of Information Act Library. Also, don’t forget to explore the Mapping SEVIS by the Numbers tool on Study in the States to see how data and trends have changed over time.
