Students: Maintain Your Student Status with Accurate Contact Information in SEVIS

June 23, 2016

Regulations require that international students work with their designated school official (DSO) to ensure contact information in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is accurate.

As an F-1 or M-1 student, it is very important that you guarantee your email address and U.S. mailing address are always current in SEVIS. You need to report any changes to your DSO when they happen. Please note, if your physical address and your mailing address in the United States are different, your DSO must have both.

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) could use either the email or mailing address on file in SEVIS to contact you for official government business. These SEVP notices are important, may be time-sensitive and could impact your student status. Check in with your DSO on a regular basis, especially when your contact information changes, to ensure you receive important notifications from SEVP.

Remember, SEVP will not call you on the phone to deliver notifications or ask for payments. Since SEVP will only communicate important notices via U.S. postal service or email, it is imperative that your address and contact information be correct in SEVIS. Read this Study in the States blog post to learn when you may be contacted by SEVP via your mailing address.

Speak with your DSO today to ensure your contact information is accurate in SEVIS. Your DSO can answer any questions you may have regarding your information in SEVIS and can help you maintain your status while you study in the United States.
