SEVIS by the Numbers Focuses on M-1 Students

May 2, 2016

This quarter’s SEVIS by the Numbers report focuses on the 10,199 M-1 students currently studying in the United States.

Individuals under the M-1 status are international students who want to enroll in a vocational program that teaches a technical skill. According to the latest SEVIS by the Numbers report:

  • The top three states where M-1 students choose to study are Florida, California and Arizona.
  • Sixty-four percent of all M-1 students are enrolled in a programs related to transportation or materials moving. Technical skills taught in this program area may include learning about aviation, railways, driving or other technologies that help effectively move people and things from one place to another.
  • Chinese males are the largest demographic in M-1 status, making up 23 percent of the entire
    M-1 student population.

Like F-1 students, M-1 students come to the United States to complete a program of study certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program. However, since the nature of the education they receive is different, they follow different rules and regulations than their F-1 counterparts.
