PDSOs: Verify SEVIS Data to Help Avoid Remedial Action Plans

May 24, 2016

If the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) finds an error in your Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) records, SEVP may issue your designated school officials a Remedial Action Plan (RAP) via email. The RAP will note a SEVIS deficiency or noncompliance with SEVP regulations and will provide instructions for rectifying areas of noncompliance.

You can avoid receiving a RAP by verifying that all SEVIS information is accurate and complete. The most common SEVIS issues that can be flagged and result in a RAP are:

  • Incorrect birth dates that don’t match the appropriate education level.
  • Incorrect education levels listed on the Form I-20, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Status.”
  • Typos on student records.

If you already received a RAP from SEVP, the email will include information that you must follow to resolve the SEVIS deficiency. Failure to comply with SEVP record keeping and reporting requirements may result in the withdrawal of your school’s certification.

Remember to always verify that your SEVIS data is accurate in order to maintain compliance with SEVP requirements. If you have questions about the RAP you received, follow the instructions for submitting inquiries on the notice you receive or contact the SEVP Response Center for assistance.
