December 28, 2015
Designated school officials (DSO) can now find important Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) regulations on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) website.
These key SEVP regulations explain the policies that govern both SEVP-certified schools and F and M students. Visit the Schools and Programs page on ICE.gov to find links to the following federal regulations:
- 8 CFR 214.1 Requirements for admission, extension, and maintenance of status - discusses the different types of nonimmigrant classifications, including F and M nonimmigrant status, and how those individuals can extend their stay and maintain status.
- 8 CFR 214.2 (f) Academic and Language Students - discusses the rules for F-1 academic and English as a Second Language (ESL) students. It explains who these students are, as well as the requirements for a full course of study, reduced course load, employment, transferring schools and other circumstances.
- 8 CFR 214.2 (m) Vocational Students - discusses the rules for M-1 vocational students. It explains who they are, as well as the requirements for what constitutes a full course of study, duration of status, reduced course load, practical training, transferring schools and other circumstances.
- 8 CFR 214.3 Petitions for Approval of Schools - discusses the requirements for obtaining and maintaining SEVP certification and reporting changes of school information to SEVP.
- 8 CFR 214.4 Denial of certification, denial of recertification or withdrawal of SEVP certification - discusses reasons why a school would be denied initial school certification or recertification or have its SEVP certification withdrawn.
If you are a DSO and have other questions about SEVP certification, you can use the Study in the States Ask a Question tool to find more information.
