Open Doors Report: United States Hosts Over 20 Percent of the World’s International Student Population

November 18, 2015

The United States hosts more of the world’s 4.5 million globally-mobile college and university students than any other country in the world. In fact, the number of international college and university students studying in the United States is almost double the number hosted by the United Kingdom, the second leading host country.

On Monday, the U.S. Department of State and the Institute of International Education (IIE) confirmed these findings with the release of the 2015 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange.

The annual report found that nearly one million international students enrolled in U.S. schools during the 2014/2015 academic year and contributed $30.8 billion to the U.S. economy. The report also highlights that the increase in the number of international students studying in the United States during the 2014/2015 academic year, as compared to 2013/2014, marks the highest growth rate the country has seen in a given academic year since the late 1970s.

You can pre-order a copy of the full Open Doors Report through the IIE website. You can also access free resources, like the report’s accompanying Fast Facts and infographics, which help visualize the data.

Information can be viewed at the continent, region and country level. The map includes information about the gender, education level and where in the United States students from each geographical area study.
