Students: Communicate These Important Changes to Your DSO

October 7, 2015

As an international student studying in the United States, it is important that you remain in contact with your designated school official (DSO) while you complete your U.S. program of study.

As you work to complete your program at a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified school, there are certain circumstances and changes that require you to work with your DSO to ensure your records remain updated and that you properly maintain your nonimmigrant student status.

F-1 students, speak with your DSO if you want to:

  • Change your major, program or degree level.
  • Transfer to a new school or take a leave of absence.
  • Take a break from school.
  • Travel outside the United States.
  • Move to a new address.
  • Request a program extension.

M-1 students, speak with your DSO before you:

  • Take a break from school.
  • Travel outside the United States.
  • Move to a new address.
  • Request a program extension.

Remember, your DSO is available to help you to maintain your nonimmigrant status while you study in the United States, but you must communicate the necessary information to them. Your DSO should be the first person you talk to if you have any questions regarding the legal requirements of your stay in the United States. Your DSO can assist in answering your questions or help you find someone who can help.
