Three Campus Safety Tips for International Students

August 6, 2015

Whether you will return to the United States for school this fall or plan to begin your first academic term at a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified school, it is important to be mindful of campus safety.

Before you start school, we recommend following these three tips to help stay safe during the upcoming school year:

  1. Talk with your designated school official (DSO). Once on campus, your DSO can help answer safety-related questions and give you more information about how to stay informed and safe.

  2. Visit your school’s website for safety and security information. Depending on your school’s resources you may find different types of useful information, including:
    • Safety processes and procedures.
    • Contact information for on-campus security or police.
    • The option to sign-up for campus emergency alerts.
    • Campus safety statistics.

  3. Use the U.S. Department of Education’s Campus Safety and Data Analysis Cutting Tool to view safety and security-related data specific to your campus. Select your school and campus to view crimes reported during the last three years.
