Regularly Log In to SEVIS for Critical Alerts

May 6, 2015
As a designated school official (DSO), you are responsible for helping your F and M students maintain their nonimmigrant status while studying in the United States. This includes updating and maintaining their student records in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

To help you and your school comply with SEVIS reporting requirements, the system generates automatic alerts for students and dependents whose records require your attention. These alerts often indicate that, according to information in SEVIS, a student’s status will change (in many cases from “Active” to “Terminated” or “Completed”) if you do not take action or make an update.

It is important to log in to SEVIS regularly to view these alerts. Below are three critical SEVIS alerts that require your timely action:

  1. Students in Initial Status with Port of Entry Records:
This alert pertains to new students who have entered the United States and whose enrollment should be reported by a DSO. DSOs must report whether or not a student has reported to the school within 30 days of the program start date. If port of entry admission information has been transmitted to SEVIS, and a DSO does not report the student’s registration in SEVIS, the system will automatically terminate the student’s record with a reason of “No Show.” If port of entry admission information is not available, and a DSO does not update SEVIS, the system will automatically cancel the student’s record.

  2. Transfer-in Students Not Registered by Program Start Date:
This alert pertains to students who have transferred into the school, but for whom no registration has been reported by the student’s program start date. Students who transfer must report to the DSO at their new school within 15 days of the “Program Start Date.” If a DSO does not update SEVIS to reflect the student’s enrollment at the school, SEVIS will automatically terminate the student’s record with a reason of “Transfer Student No Show.”

  3. Students with Pending Change of Status:
This alert pertains to students who have filed a change of status request with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The student must inform the DSO of any developments with the application so the DSO can properly manage the record. If USCIS approves the change of status application and a DSO does not update SEVIS to reflect the student’s enrollment at the school, SEVIS will automatically terminate the student record. If the change of status is not approved by USCIS before the “Program Start Date,” a DSO must defer the program start date to the next available term. SEVIS will cancel records that are not deferred.
