End-of-Year Reminders for Students: Three Changes to Report to Your DSO

May 19, 2015

As the school year comes to a close, it is important to keep your designated school official (DSO) aware of important changes that may affect your status as an F or M student. Your DSO is responsible for keeping track of changes and making updates in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

Are you wondering what needs to be reported to your DSO? Below are three common end-of-year activities that involve working with your DSO.

  1. Transferring to another Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified school:

If you decide to transfer schools as an F or M student, remember, you must select another SEVP-certified school to attend. To be eligible to transfer, you must consistently maintain F or M status, and follow the correct transfer procedures. Read Instructions for Transferring to Another School as an F-1 Student or Instructions for Transferring to Another School as an M-1 Student for more information about the transfer process.

  2. Changing your major:

Some students arrive at a university or college knowing what classes they want to take; however, other students may later decide to change their majors. If you are thinking about changing your major, speak with your DSO first. They will make sure your SEVIS record is up-to-date. Read Changing Majors for additional information. Remember, F-1 students can change majors, but M-1 students cannot.

  3. Taking a break or temporary leave of absence from school:

If you are an F-1 student and you need to take a temporary leave of absence from school, keep the Five-Month Rule in mind. Under this policy, if you are away from classes for more than five months your SEVIS record will become terminated. Talk with your DSO before deciding to take time away. They will help you understand the options to maintain your status and report any necessary changes in SEVIS. Remember, an M-1 student is not eligible for vacation when school is in session.

It is important to report these changes as early as possible. Want more information? Read When to Report Changes to Your DSO.
