Questions from Designated School Officials: What is the New Student Employment Page in SEVIS?

April 27, 2015
Questions from Designated School Officials is a blog series on Study in the States for designated school officials (DSOs). Each month, we will answer a question that will help you advise your F and/or M students.If you are a DSO and would like to submit a question, you can email us or ask us via social media, your Field Representative or the SEVP Response Center. We may edit questions for clarity and consistency and may not feature all submissions on Study in the States.

Question: What is the new Student Employment page in SEVIS? What information is included on the page and how do I access it?

Answer: As part of the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System’s (SEVIS) Release 6.20, designated school officials (DSO) can now access a new Student Employment page in SEVIS. This page displays past, present and future employment authorizations granted for an international student under a specific SEVIS ID.

Information available on the Student Employment page includes:

  • Employment type;
  • Whether the employment is full-time or part-time;
  • DSO-recommended employment start and end dates;
  • Actual start and end dates;
  • The student’s school;
  • The student’s level of study;
  • The status of the employment request; and
  • The receipt number, if applicable.
The Student Employment page in SEVIS now features all authorizations, including those from previously attended SEVP-certified schools. Previously only active employment authorizations were visible in a student’s SEVIS record. This additional information will be especially helpful to DSOs when assessing an international student’s eligibility for optional practical training
