Learn About the American Red Cross

March 20, 2015
March is American Red Cross Month. The American Red Cross is one of the United States’ flagship humanitarian organizations. It responds to emergencies and provides disaster relief to communities in need across the country and around the world.

However, their services extend much further than this. In addition to providing life-saving services to disaster-stricken areas, the American Red Cross:

  • Is the country’s largest single supplier of blood and blood products — providing more than 40 percent of the American blood supply to those in need;
  • Supports American military families who face the challenges serving in the armed forces may bring; and
  • Teaches health and safety courses to more than nine million people who want to be prepared to help others in an emergency.
If you are on a school campus, the Red Cross offers campus clubs as a way to get involved. According to the Red Cross, these groups provide “you and your peers with opportunities to make a difference by addressing your community’s greatest needs and developing leadership skills. Red Cross Clubs empower you with knowledge and life-saving skills to help prepare your school and community to respond to emergencies.”

Visit the American Red Cross website to learn more and how to enroll in a training course, give blood or volunteer your time.
