Get Ready for March Madness – Tips for International Student Athletes

March 16, 2015
Yesterday was “Selection Sunday,” an annual event that begins the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Men’s Division I March Madness basketball tournament.

During Selection Sunday, the NCAA selects the final U.S. college teams to participate in the basketball tournament. This tournament will last through April 6, when the two final teams will compete in the NCAA national basketball championship game. Today, the NCAA also selects the final participants for the Women’s Division I March Madness basketball tournament.

March Madness is just one of the NCAA’s many popular sports tournaments and events. U.S. colleges and universities have a long and proud history of cheering on collegiate athletes as a way to build morale and strengthen the campus community. Are you interested in becoming more than a fan and want to join an athletic team at your Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified school?

If so, read SEVP Director Lou Farrell’s latest U.S. News and World Report International Student Counsel blog post, Follow this Playbook for International Student Athletes. Director Farrell explains that federal regulations require all F and M student athletes maintain their student status while participating in extracurricular activities.

Help us spread Director Farrell’s playbook and share this post on Facebook and Twitter, along with your favorite team pick to win the tournament using #MarchMadness.
