Three Great Ways to Spend Your Spring Break

February 24, 2015
For many F and M students studying at U.S. schools, spring break is near. For those unfamiliar with the concept of spring break, it is usually a one to two week break determined by the academic institution you attend.

Spring break is a great time to explore your surroundings outside the classroom. Remember, during the break it is important that you maintain your student status and properly manage your academic schedule. Your designated school official can also help answer any questions you have about how to maintain your student status while on break.

If you are unsure how to spend this time off from classes and homework, check with your international student office for any events it might hold during the break. If you want to explore life off-campus, there are several fun options for you to consider:

Volunteering means giving away your time free of charge to those in need. As an F or M student, you do not need the government’s prior approval to volunteer your time with a community service organization since you will not receive compensation for your time or energy. Check out organizations like the United Way’s Alternative Spring Break program or the United We Serve initiative for more information.

Did you know that the United States has more than 400 national parks covering over 84 million acres? The National Park Service, another U.S. government agency, has a proud history of preserving and protecting some of America’s most amazing landscapes so the public may enjoy nature’s beauty.

As an F or M student you may be eligible to drive in the United States. If you or one of your friends or family members has a U.S. driver’s license, taking a road trip is a great spring break option. The U.S. Interstate System has been called the Greatest Public Works Project in History and allows for easy and safe travel throughout the country. Learn more about the expansive U.S. highway system at the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration’s website

These are only some of the options on how to spend your time away from class; what other ideas do you have? Share your spring break plans with us on Twitter and Facebook using #SpringBreak2015. Have a safe and fun adventure!
