Six Tips to Help Keep You Safe from Floods

February 20, 2015
During the winter months, depending on where you study or live, the weather can be somewhat unpredictable. Ready.gov’s yearlong #Ready2015 campaign helps you prepare for natural disasters and weather hazards.

One of the most common hazards in the United States is flooding. Floods can devastate a local community or span across multiple states. There are many reasons how and why floods occur and Ready.gov provides a list of tips and other resources that can help you prepare. A few useful tips include:

  1. Build an emergency kit and a family communications plan;
  2. Reinforce or elevate your home to stay clear of floodplains;
  3. Elevate the furnace, water heater or electric panel in your home if it is in a high-risk area;
  4. Install “check valves” for the drains in your home;
  5. Seal walls in basements with waterproof material; and
  6. Construct barriers around your home to stop floodwaters.
