February 19, 2015
While many traditionally celebrate New Year’s Eve on Dec. 31, some people of Chinese descent also enjoy the festivities of the Chinese New Year, which takes place today, Feb. 19.
Chinese New Year is widely celebrated in the United States. Did you know that according to the latest SEVIS by the Numbers report, there are nearly 840,000 international students from Asia studying in the United States?
Of those students from Asia, 329,927 are from China. Chinese students make up 30 percent of all F and M students studying in the United States! SEVIS by the Numbers also shows that there are almost an equal amount of Chinese nonimmigrant male and female students studying in the United States.
Additionally, 37 percent of Chinese students in the United States are enrolled in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) courses of study. Promoting STEM fields is a priority within the Obama administration and around the world due to their impact on global economic growth.
