Get Involved on Campus
January 26, 2015
Now that the new school term has begun, you may be thinking about different ways to get involved on campus and outside of your classroom. Joining a club or student group is a great way to enhance your study abroad experience, while also sharing your culture and experiences with other students.
According to USA Today, “international students offer a unique cultural opportunity for their domestic counterparts.” Events, such as Florida State University’s weekly “International Coffee Hour,” help bring together international and American students. When you get involved in campus activities like this, you not only learn about other cultures, but you also have the opportunity to teach others about your part of the world.
Your school’s international student office is a useful resource for finding campus activities, clubs and events. Your designated school official (DSO) can also help make sure you are in compliance with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s rules and regulations so that you maintain your student status.
Before you pick an activity to participate in, remember:
- You must be enrolled in a full course of study each school term;
- You must attend and pass all classes;
- Ask your DSO about requesting a possible program extension if you believe you will be unable to complete your program by the end date listed on your Form I-20, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Status;”
- Do not drop a class without first speaking with your DSO.
If you have questions about campus activities or maintaining your student status, talk with your DSO.
