Spotlight on the U.S. Department of State

November 20, 2014
The U.S. Department of State is a sponsor for this week’s International Education Week (IEW). The department’s mission is to “shape and sustain a peaceful, prosperous, just, and democratic world and foster conditions for stability and progress for the benefit of the American people and people everywhere.”

One of the ways that this department builds positive relationships is by supporting international education. The Department of State issues student visas through U.S. consulates and embassies, and oversees the exchange visitor program

The Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs works with non- and for-profit organizations to encourage diversity in the United States. Its EducationUSA advisers provide guidance on the United States' admissions process, and assists students in finding the right school or program. It funds and manages a variety of professional, academic, cultural and athletic exchanges between the United States and more than 160 countries.

The Department of State joins the celebration of international education and exchanges around the world. Please visit the IEW website to learn more about upcoming IEW events and resources. To learn more about the Department of State, visit the Study in the States’ Here to Help page.
