Please note: On May 10, 2016, DHS replaced the 17-month STEM OPT extension with a new 24-month STEM OPT extension. All existing 17-month STEM OPT EADs will remain valid until the EAD expires, is terminated or revoked. For more information about the new STEM OPT rule, please visit the STEM OPT Hub

Investing in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) is a priority for any country that wants to remain competitive in the evolving global economy. STEM-related careers are in increasingly high demand and American trade schools, colleges and universities want to promote educational programs that provide students, including F and M students, the necessary background they need to excel.

The Obama Administration wants to attract and retain highly skilled immigrants and enhance opportunities for these workers. To help make this happen, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security expanded the list of eligible STEM programs.

If you want to enroll in a STEM program of study while in the United States, find a Student and Exchange Visitor Program-certified school and select a STEM-designated degree program. If you have questions about these or other programs, visit the EducationUSA website or talk to someone at one of the 170 EducationUSA advising centers around the world.
