Government Agencies Encourage Entrepreneurs

October 17, 2014
The U.S. Department of State recently highlighted its partnership with the Millennial Trains Project. The project combines foreign and domestic civic-minded young leaders, and empowers them to advance entrepreneurial ideas through a cross country train trip in the United States. This year the project added five Fulbright scholars from across the globe to the discussion group.

The Millennial Trains Project is just one opportunity for F-1 students to explore new and exciting entrepreneurial ideas with their U.S. counterparts. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security launched the Entrepreneur in Residence Initiative in 2011 to help welcome and retain the next generation of foreign entrepreneurs. The initiative allows F-1 students to start a business that directly relates to their major area of study and gives them a financial stake in their success. Since starting your own business is a form of working in the United States, you must first talk to your designated school official about your eligibility.

If you want to be an international student and entrepreneur, you must ensure you understand how to maintain your visa status throughout the process. To learn more about entrepreneurial options, visit the International Students and Entrepreneurship resource page and the Entrepreneur Pathways page.
