National Preparedness Month: Build a Kit

September 17, 2014

While you are in the United States as an F or M student, you should prepare for natural disasters and severe weather. Whether it is a hurricane, tornado or other event, you should always plan for inclement weather.

One way you can prepare and find additional preparedness resources is with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). FEMA provides useful preparedness resources through Ready.gov. One of the steps that FEMA recommends in order to prepare for emergencies is to build a kit. Below are supplies that FEMA recommends having in case of an emergency.

  • Three-day supply of non-perishable food (dried fruit, canned tuna fish, peanut butter, etc.)
  • At least one gallon of bottled water for drinking and personal hygiene
  • First aid kit
  • Prescription medication and glasses
  • Battery-powered or hand-cranked radio, flashlight and extra batteries

Along with our fellow departments, agencies and programs, we are celebrating preparedness all month. Read our Study in the States blog, and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for tips on being prepared.
