Learn About the Social Security Administration

September 25, 2014
As an international student, you may have interest in working in the United States or obtaining a driver’s license. For students who have these interests, you must contact your designated school official (DSO) and learn how to obtain a Social Security number (SSN) at the Social Security Administration (SSA). SSA is the government agency that distributes a social security card with your individual SSN. This is an official document used to verify that you are eligible to apply for employment in the United States. You can also use a social security card as a form of identification. To apply for an SSN, you must complete the following:

Speak with your DSO about your interest in working in the United States. You cannot work without proper authorization.
Make sure that your status is active in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System for at least two days.
Wait 10 full days once you arrive in the United States to apply for an SSN. This allows SSA to verify your immigration status information.
Find your local SSA office using the Social Security Office Locator.
Apply for an SSN card in person at your local office. Remember to provide the representatives at the office with all original and current information to prove your age, identity and immigration status.
