Four Steps to Begin Studying in the States
September 29, 2014
Taking the first step to studying in the United States is a big decision. If you are interested in becoming an international student in the United States, Study in the States’ Start Here page is a great way to get started. The four key steps to know before studying in the United States include:
- Find a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified school. Keep in mind that only SEVP-certified schools can accept international students. To make sure that your chosen school is SEVP-certified, visit the Study in the States school search page.
- Complete the Form I-20. Once you have applied and been accepted to the SEVP-certified school of your choice, the school’s designated school official will send you the Form I-20, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status.” You need this form in order to apply for a student visa to enter the United States.
- Pay the I-901 Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) fee. You must pay your SEVIS fee before you apply for a student visa. To make a payment, visit FMJfee.com. As you travel to the United States, the Form I-20 and your SEVIS fee receipt are two of the three to five documents you must hand-carry to the United States.
- Apply for a student visa. Make an appointment at your U.S. embassy or consulate to apply for a visa. Read How to Prepare for Your Visa Appointment to learn more about the documents to bring to your appointment, including your Form I-20 and I-901 SEVIS fee receipt.
