Exploring Campus Outside the Classroom

September 19, 2014
As you settle into the new school year, you may want to find a hobby or extracurricular activity on campus, like participating on a sports team or joining a club. Such activities are a great way to enhance your experience studying abroad.

Your school’s international student office is a useful resource for finding activities and clubs on campus. The designated school official (DSO) in the office can help you navigate your options and make sure that you are in compliance with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security rules and regulations. As an F or M student in the United States, you also have a chance to volunteer in your local community. Even when volunteering or participating in these activities, you must always remember to maintain your student status. Therefore, before you pick the hobby or club you would like to participate in, remember to do the following:

Enroll in a full course of study each semester
Attend and pass all classes
If you believe that you will be unable to complete your program by the end date listed on your Form I-20, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Status,” ask your DSO about requesting a possible program extension
Do not drop a class without first speaking with your DSO
Do not work without authorization. If you want to work in the United States, you must first speak with your DSO about your eligibility.

If you have questions about maintaining your status, ask your DSO.
