Parents: Help Your Child Navigate the International Student Process
Making decisions about where to go to school can be overwhelming for your child, especially if they want to study in the United States, or are returning as an F or M student. As parents, you can help your child through this process by reviewing the process with them. Use the tips listed below to help your child determine whether to study abroad or return to the United States as an international student.
Does your child want to study in the United States?
- Review the Study Guide to the States — it explains each step in the F and M student process.
- Check the School Search page to make sure your child’s school of choice is Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified.
- Watch the Student to Student: Studying in the States video to learn what your child can expect and how to stay compliant with U.S. Department of Homeland Security regulations while studying in the United States.
Has your child been accepted to study in the United States?
- Pay your I-901 Student and Exchange Visitor Information System fee. This fee must be paid before your child applies for a visa, regardless if they are an F or M student.
- Apply for a visa to travel to the United States. Your child needs a visa to enter the country.
- Get Ready to Go! Learn what your child needs as they travel to the United States.
Is your child currently studying in the United States?
- Review Study in the States’ Student Resources to help your child understand the rules for obtaining the benefits and tools they can use while studying in the United States.
- Talk with your child’s Designated School Official (DSO). They are there to help your child maintain their nonimmigrant student status. Your child can also talk to their DSO if they have questions or need advice when making decisions.
- Contact the SEVP Response Center if you or your child have additional questions or need assistance.
Lastly, remember to follow Study in the States on Twitter and Facebook for the latest news and information about the nonimmigrant student process.
