How to Prepare for Summer Weather
Now that the school year has ended, you may be considering ways to spend the summer months. Keep in mind that summers in different locations of the United States consist of high temperatures and humidity. When planning your summer activities, remember to prepare for possible excessive heat.
If you are in an area with extremely high temperatures, follow the safety tips below to avoid heat-related illness.
- Reduce, eliminate or reschedule outdoor activities. Wait until temperatures are at their lowest to be active outside.
- Protect your skin by wearing sunscreen and reapply frequently.
- Wear lightweight and light-colored clothing.
- Drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages and limit your caffeine consumption.
- Spend time in air-conditioned places, such as the library, a store or your school’s student union.
- Check with the National Weather Service for local weather alerts, such as heat advisories or excessive heat warnings.
When you take a break indoors from the hot weather, use the time to catch up on the new features on Study in the States and read about how to maintain your student status during the summer break.
Remember these guidelines to stay safe and cool during the summer, and visit the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the National Weather Service and Ready campaign for more information on how to prepare for excessive heat.
