Parents: Help Your Student after Graduation
Graduation is an exciting time for students. In addition to preparing for final exams, purchasing a cap and gown, and returning home, F and M students have to prepare to maintain their status after they graduate. As a parent, you can help them make informed decisions. Here is what you should remember:
- Once your student completes their program of study, they must depart the United States no later than 60 days (if an F-1 student) or 30 days (if an M-1 student) after their program end date listed on the Form I-20, "Certificate of Elegibility for Nonimmigrant Status" before they are considered out of status.
- Your student may remain in the United States if any of the following apply:
- They will start a new program of study (either at the same school or after having the designated school official transfer your record to another Student and Exchange Visitor Program-certified school).
- They are authorized in post-completion optional practical training.
- They have been authorized for H-1B status and are on cap gap.
Failure to complete the appropriate requirements is a violation of nonimmigrant status. If your son or daughter does not comply with these regulations, they need to leave the country immediately.
Do you or your child have questions about maintaining status? Talk to their designated school official for more information.
