Please note: On May 10, 2016, DHS replaced the 17-month STEM OPT extension with a new 24-month STEM OPT extension. The Department of State recently hosted an exhibit at the USA Science and Engineering Festival. The popularity of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) is growing around the United States and was highlighted by this event.

“Each and every day, I see how we use science and technology to advance our diplomacy,” said Secretary of State John Kerry.

According to SEVIS by the Numbers, 35 percent of F-1 and M-1 students are enrolled in a STEM program. An F-1 and/or M-1 student can find STEM programs at all educational levels; many colleges and universities offer programs in these fields at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Graduates from these programs are important to innovation and job creation in the United States.

Students who graduate with an approved STEM degree are eligible to remain in the United States for an additional 17 months on an optional practical training STEM extension.
