School Officials: Protect Your SEVIS Passwords

May 27, 2014

As a designated school official (DSO), you have a personal user name and password for the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Your SEVIS login information allows you to access your school’s Form I–17, “Petition for Approval of School for Attendance of Nonimmigrant Students,” and your student’s records. Each DSO has a personal account and it is important not to share your password with anyone.

Password sharing is a security risk that can compromise the accountability, integrity and confidentiality of SEVIS. Giving your username or password to anyone else is also a violation of the Department of Homeland Security Sensitive Systems Policy Directive.

As a DSO at a certified school, you are responsible for keeping the Form I–17 and student records up‑to‑date in SEVIS. Remember to keep your login secure and to create a new password if you ever believe yours has been compromised.
