DSOs: Why Update Your SEVIS Data
All certified schools are required to keep data accurate in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). This is important because schools are a key link between F and M students and the government agencies with a role in the international student process. An important responsibility you have as a DSO is to make sure the information on your students’ records is accurate. It is critical that you initially enter their information correctly and continually make updates, such as a change in address or name. Students should immediately report any changes to you.
If your students are getting ready to take their annual vacation and leave the country after they complete the semester, you should make sure that their records are updated and their Form I-20, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status,” has a valid signature for reentry on page 3. If information is incomplete or their status is incorrect, they may experience problems later. When they try to enter the United States at a port of entry, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers may have a hard time verifying their identity and students could see delays in arrival or potentially have to depart the country. Incorrect or outdated information could also potentially impact any benefits, like working, they apply for with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
