ICE Announces Extension of Employment Authorization Eligibility for Certain Haitian Students

March 4, 2014

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has announced it will extend the suspension of certain requirements for F-1 nonimmigrant Haitian students who are experiencing severe economic hardship as a direct result of the January 12, 2010, earthquake in Haiti. Effective from now until January 22, 2016, the extension will enable eligible F-1 students to continue to obtain employment authorization, work an increased number of hours during the school term, and if necessary, reduce their course load while continuing to maintain their F-1 student status.

The only students this extension applies to are F-1 students from Haiti who were legally present in the United States and enrolled in a Student and Exchange Visitor Program-certified school on January 12, 2010, when this earthquake took place. They must be currently maintaining their student status and experiencing economic hardship.

You can read the official news release on ICE's website.
