While researching colleges and universities in the United States you may have come across the term SEVIS. SEVIS is an acronym for the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, an important part of the international student process in the United States.

So what is it and what does it have to do with you? SEVIS is an online system that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) uses through the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) to maintain information about SEVP-certified schools and the F and M students who study here. Your designated school official (DSO) manages your SEVIS record and it helps them keep track of important details so they can assist you during school transfers, if you have problems with a class, and making normal progress toward completing your academic program.

It is important that your SEVIS record is always updated with the most current information. You are responsible for informing your DSO of changes to your:

• name
• address
• major field of study
• other mandatory items

When you notify your DSO of these changes, they will update your SEVIS record.
