DSOs: How and When to Make Updates to the Form I-17

February 27, 2014

As the designated school official (DSO) of a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)‑certified school, you are responsible for making updates to your school’s Form I-17, “Petition for Approval of School for Attendance by Nonimmigrant Student.” This is a key part of the certification process.

SEVP recommends that all DSOs review their school’s Form I-17 regularly to ensure that all information is accurate and if it is not, you can make a timely update. If you need to make an update to any field, you make the change to the currently approved form in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and re‑submit it to SEVP. Some updates may also require you to submit supporting documentation to SEVP. After your updates have been submitted, an SEVP adjudicator will review the updates for approval or denial. Your school will receive a notification regarding the adjudication decision through SEVIS.

If you have questions, contact the SEVP Response Center at (703) 603-3400, or sevp@ice.dhs.gov.
