“We the Geeks” Highlights STEM as a Key Priority for the United States

December 18, 2013

Please note: On May 10, 2016, DHS replaced the 17-month STEM OPT extension with a new 24-month STEM OPT extension. All existing 17-month STEM OPT EADs will remain valid until the EAD expires, is terminated or revoked. For more information about the new STEM OPT rule, please visit the STEM OPT Hub

Do you want to know how satellites orbit the moon? How to build automobiles? How to solve a complicated equation? If any of these, or something similar, applies to what you want to learn, you may consider an academic program focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Did you know that STEM is a priority for the United States, including for President Barack Obama?

One example is the White House’s “We the Geeks” series of Google+ hangouts. You can join these sessions to learn more about the future of STEM in the United States, to get inspired to be innovative and to continue learning. Each session focuses on different topics such as robotics, asteroids and student startups. Each session also includes expert speakers to give more information on each topic. Follow these conversations by joining a hangout or following the hashtag #WeTheGeeks on Twitter.

STEM also is important to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). For example, in 2012, DHS expanded the list of STEM degree programs eligible for the 17-month optional practical training extension. This means that students who graduate with one of the indicated STEM degrees can remain in the United States for employment, if approved by their designated school official.
